Players stop after every foul even when advantage is played

They look at the referee, appeal and the attack carries on without them. How do you coach 'play on' without telling players to ignore genuine fouls?

Set one clear expectation: play until the referee stops the game. That does not mean ignoring genuine fouls. It means the player deals with the live situation first and communicates respectfully at the next stoppage. Praise the behaviour you want. A defender who believes it was a foul but recovers and stops the attack has shown excellent focus. If appealing becomes repeated and affects the team, use a short conversation or substitution as a reset. Explain that the issue is not caring about the decision; it is leaving the game while the ball is still moving. The captain can speak calmly with the referee when appropriate. At U13, competitive emotion is normal. Managing it is part of development. Players can feel frustrated, protect themselves and still remain involved in the next action. If the behaviour is repeated and leaves the team exposed, a short substitution is reasonable. Explain the exact reason calmly: they stopped playing while the ball was live. Give them a clear reset and return them when ready. The consequence should teach focus, not become punishment for disagreeing with a decision.
