Do you coach differently when the wind is dominating the game?

We had a match where every long ball held up one way and flew through the other. The players kept trying the same passes in both halves. Is adapting to wind a useful U12 problem, or should the coach avoid adding another tactical message?

The playing principles can remain the same, but the execution has to adapt. Use the warm-up to show the players what the ball is doing. Against the wind, support may need to be closer and passes may need to stay lower. With the wind, the weight of forward passes and goalkeeper distribution needs more care because the ball can run away. I would give one observable cue: what is the wind doing to the ball? That invites players to adjust rather than follow a new tactical plan. The team can still try to keep possession, find space and play forward when the opportunity is right. At U12, weather is a useful problem-solving experience. The coach should help players notice the condition, then avoid narrating every adaptation. Principles remain stable; distance, weight and timing change. Ask, 'What is the wind doing to the ball today?' Let them answer during the warm-up. That question encourages them to adjust pass weight, support distance and first touch themselves without the coach prescribing a different action for each direction.
