Do you change how you play on heavy grass compared with 3G?

On 3G we can move it quickly and trust the bounce. On a wet grass pitch the ball stops, first touches become harder and some of our normal combinations disappear. Should players adapt the style, or should we keep asking for the same principles in different conditions?

Keep the principles and adapt the technique and distances. On heavy grass, the ball travels more slowly, so support often needs to be closer and passes may need more weight. Players may need to move earlier because a combination that works on 3G can arrive late on grass. The bounce is less predictable, which affects first touch, goalkeeper distribution and whether a defender can safely let the ball run. Use the warm-up to explore the surface. Ask the players what is different rather than announcing a new style. You can still build, combine and switch play. The execution may use fewer risky square passes, more secure first contacts and more patience. At U13, adapting to the surface is part of game understanding. The principle stays familiar; the players adjust how they deliver it. Start with support distance. If teammates are closer, players have safer options when the ball slows or the first touch becomes untidy. Let pass weight and touch choice develop from the warm-up. One clear adjustment is easier to carry into the game than three technical instructions.
