New five-second goal-kick countdown – are coaches changing routines?

The 2026/27 laws now allow a visible five-second count if a team delays a goal kick, with a corner awarded if the kick is not taken. Our players are used to the coach moving everyone into position before every restart. Should we now simplify the setup, and how do we stop speed becoming panic?

The five-second countdown is not automatic from the moment a goal kick is awarded. Under the current law, the referee uses it when they judge that the player or team is unfairly delaying the restart. The referee whistles, signals and visually counts the five seconds. If the kick is still not taken, a corner is awarded. Check the competition rules and briefing, because youth competitions need to communicate how the law is being applied. From a coaching perspective, simplify the restart. Players should begin moving into useful positions before the ball is ready, and the goalkeeper should scan while retrieving it. Speed must not replace decision-making. The team needs a small number of familiar principles so it can restart without waiting for the coach to arrange every player. Preparation creates calm; rushing creates panic. The law has changed, but coaches should still check the competition's current rules, implementation notice and referee briefing. Competitions may need to explain local procedures and education. Prepare the players for the principle, then confirm how it will be applied in your league rather than relying on touchline assumptions.

If our league has not sent anything specific yet, would you still train the five-second principle now so the players are not caught out later?

Yes. You can prepare the habit without pretending you know exactly how every referee will manage it. Teach players to organise early, offer options quickly and avoid deliberate delay. Then confirm the league's implementation before matchday. Those habits are useful even if the countdown is applied slightly differently.
