Why do we always start the second half asleep?

We have a calm team talk, players say all the right things, then the first five minutes after half-time look like everyone has just woken up from a nap. Is the problem the talk, the warm-up, the substitutions or just one of those football things?

The half-time routine is probably more important than another message. Give the players a short drink and breathing period, then one or two clear observations. Before the restart, include two minutes of movement and ball contact, especially for players who have been sitting. Finish with one first-action target, such as win the first duel, keep the first pass or recover together after the first loss. Avoid a long seated team talk that lets body temperature and attention drop. Substitutes entering at half-time should complete their warm-up before the second half starts, not during the final sentence. At U13, the players can help set the first five-minute intention. The aim is not to create artificial excitement. It is to return them physically ready, mentally clear and connected to one simple priority. Try two minutes to drink and breathe, three minutes for one player observation and one coach message, then two minutes of movement and passing before the restart. Confirm positions before the movement begins. Finish with one first-action target. If the talk cannot fit into three minutes, save part of it.

The two-minute movement before the second half is probably the bit we miss. Would you include the starting eleven as well, or mainly the substitutes who have been sitting?

Include everybody, but the players who have been sitting may need a little more movement. Keep it simple: short passing, changes of direction and a couple of sharper actions. The whole group should return to the pitch feeling switched on, not only the substitutes.
