Player-led half-time is dominated by the loudest voices

We tried letting the players speak first. Two confident players answered everything and the quieter ones switched off. I still like the idea of ownership, but how do you structure the conversation so it is not just another stage for the same leaders?

Structure the ownership before opening the discussion. Give every player 20 or 30 seconds to think individually. Then let them discuss one question in pairs. Ask two or three different pairs to share, including players who do not usually speak first. The captain can summarise what the group noticed, but should not answer every question. Keep the questions specific: what is helping us progress, what is causing the biggest problem, and what is one change we can make? After listening, the coach adds one clear message and confirms the next action. This keeps half-time player-led without making it unstructured. Quieter players often have useful observations but need a safer route into the conversation. Ownership is not measured by how long the loudest players speak. It is measured by whether the group contributes to a clear decision they understand. Use this order: 30 seconds of silent thinking, one minute in pairs, two pairs share one observation each, the captain summarises, then the coach adds one message and confirms the next action. Change which pairs report each week. That gives quieter players preparation time and a defined route into the conversation.
