Would you ever stop an U7 taking every kick-in as a shot?

Our little goals are close enough that one lad has worked out he can shoot from almost every restart. Sometimes it goes in, sometimes it flies miles away. Part of me thinks let him try it, another part thinks he is missing the whole point of looking for teammates and space. Do you coach that or let the results teach him?

I would let him try the shot, but I would help him notice the picture before he decides. If he shoots and scores, that might genuinely have been the best option. If three defenders are in front of him and a teammate is free to the side, there is a different problem to solve. Rather than banning the shot, ask something like “What could you see before you restarted?” In training, vary where defenders and teammates start so the same restart produces different answers. Then shooting every time stops working by itself. I would not create a rule that says he must pass first. That just replaces one automatic action with another. Keep the confidence to shoot. Add the habit of looking.

This feels like a 'look, then choose' problem rather than a shooting problem.

Because sometimes the teammate stands free for six games and never gets used. I would not ban the shot but I would help the player notice the teammate.

Thats fair. I just dont want 'use your teammate' turning into 'passing is the mature answer'.

We had a kid score three from restarts and every adult wanted to ban it. Why? The opposition eventually learned to stop it. That was the game teaching both sides.

Agree, but I would ask him to look first. The issue is not shooting, it is deciding before he has even seen the pitch.

Let him shoot. If it keeps working, it might actually be a good decision.
