Our 3v3 looks like six players following the ball

Early days, but every game is basically a little swarm moving from one side to the other. Im not expecting shape at U7, but do you give them any help with spreading out or just let them learn that by bumping into each other for a while? I dont want to overcoach it, equally some of them barely get a chance because they are always stood behind someone else.

I’d give them a little help, but I would not try to remove the swarm completely. At U7, following the ball is normal. They are still learning that moving away from it can actually help. I’d use one simple question when it becomes really crowded: “Can you find somewhere your teammate can see you?” Then let the game carry on. You can also make the pitch slightly wider within the allowed range if the group genuinely needs more room, but I would try the coaching first. The useful learning is when a child moves away, suddenly receives a pass and realises why that space mattered. That moment is much stronger than us placing them in three neat positions. A bit of bunching is part of the process. We just want to start giving them reasons to discover the space.

I would avoid drawing three areas and asking them to stay in them just to make the game look nicer. We did that years ago with a group and the spacing improved instantly, but only because the adults had removed the decision. I would rather it takes longer and the children discover why moving away helps.

Ours looked exactly like that for the first few weeks. Then one or two started moving away because they realised they actually got the ball more. It came without anyone putting them in zones.

The swarm is normal. One little cue about finding a space to help is enough for me at U7.
