Why is my left-footed son always played on the right?

The coach says it helps him come inside onto his stronger foot. He enjoys the role, but he rarely goes outside the defender and seems to receive in the same crowded space as the central midfielder. Is playing on the opposite side good development at U12, or should he also get time on the left?

Playing on the right can help a left-footed player receive inside and combine centrally, but it should not become their only picture. I would use positional blocks rather than moving him every few minutes. A block of several games on the right gives enough time to understand the role. A later block on the left lets him practise going outside, crossing earlier and receiving with a different body position. The important question is what the coach wants him to learn in each role. If every right-sided action ends in the same crowded inside space, the role is not developing enough variety. At U12, balanced exposure is more useful than deciding he is an inverted winger. Let him experience both sides, explain the different problems and review which actions each side encourages. Four to six matches is usually enough to create continuity without fixing the role for too long. Review what he is actually experiencing, not just the calendar. If the same actions repeat every week, change sooner. If he is still discovering new problems, the block can continue a little longer.

Thanks. The positional-block idea gives us something much clearer to discuss with him than simply asking whether he prefers left or right.
