School coach and club coach are giving opposite advice

At school my son is told to release the ball in one or two touches. At club he is encouraged to carry it and commit players. Both coaches have good reasons, but he now asks which version is correct. How do you help a player understand context rather than choose which coach to obey?

Help him understand the problem each coach is trying to solve. The school coach may want faster circulation because the team has little time on the ball. The club coach may want him to carry when doing so commits an opponent and creates space. Neither instruction needs to become a permanent rule. Ask him two questions: what pressure was around you, and what did carrying or releasing create? If the mixed messages continue, a brief conversation between the coaches can help, particularly if the child is becoming anxious. It does not need to be a debate about philosophy. The message to the player is that good footballers adapt to context. One-touch play is useful in one picture. Carrying is useful in another. His task is not choosing which coach to obey. It is learning what the game needs in that moment. Contact is useful only if the child is becoming confused or anxious. A short message can clarify that both coaches value decision-making but are emphasising different pictures. If the player can already explain the context and adapt, direct contact may not be necessary. Keep the solution proportionate.
