Players scan before the pass, then stop looking

We have worked a lot on checking shoulders before receiving. A few players now do the first scan really well, but once the ball travels they lock onto it and miss the defender moving behind them. How do you coach the second look without turning every pass into another instruction from the side?

The second look needs to happen while the ball is travelling, not after it arrives. I like the cue: check, travel, check. Use it briefly in training, then remove the words and see whether the behaviour stays. You can design the practice so the defender is allowed to change position once the pass has been played. That makes the first scan useful but not enough on its own. After an action, ask the receiver where the pressure moved while the ball travelled. That helps them connect the second scan to a real reason. I would avoid shouting 'scan again' for every pass. The player can become dependent on the reminder. At U12, the next step is recognising that the picture is always changing. The first scan gives information, and the second one confirms whether that information is still true. A useful next step is to praise the timing of that second look, even if the final action is not perfect. Once the player understands why scanning matters, the coaching focus can shift from simply checking a shoulder to updating the picture at the right moment.

Really useful. We will stick with the second-look timing and praise the information they collect rather than constantly shouting scan from the side.
