How do you get the thrower back into the next action?

Our thrower often stands outside the pitch admiring the throw while the receiver is immediately under pressure. I want them to understand that the throw creates a new 2v1 or support angle. Any simple practice that keeps the restart realistic?

Make the thrower part of the next action. In a 4v4 or 5v5 game, restart every ball with a throw-in and temporarily award an extra point if the thrower receives again within the next two actions. That condition should not stay for the whole session. It simply exaggerates the idea that the thrower can step back onto the pitch and create another support angle. The receiver also learns not to treat the first pass as the end of the restart. Ask the thrower: where can you move so the receiver can see you without bringing another defender into the same space? Sometimes the best movement is behind the ball, sometimes inside and sometimes beyond. The aim is not a fixed give-and-go. It is helping the thrower recognise that their involvement continues immediately after release. To keep the choice open, you can reward the thrower simply for becoming a visible option again rather than for actually receiving the next pass. The coach observes whether the support angle reappears, then removes the condition after a short block to see whether the habit remains.

I like rewarding the thrower for becoming available rather than forcing the pass back. Would you tell the receiver that the thrower should be their first option, or leave all the choices completely open?

Leave the choices open. The thrower should become a useful option, not the compulsory option. Ask the receiver what the movement created. Sometimes the return pass is best, sometimes it moves a defender and opens somebody else. The learning is about improving the picture after the throw.
