Our back four drops deeper every time one ball goes over us

We got caught by one early ball in behind at the weekend and after that the whole back line seemed to retreat five yards. It stopped the same pass but then their midfield had loads of room. How do you reset the line after getting caught once instead of defending the rest of the game scared of it?

VERIFIED COACH RESPONSE

One ball in behind should change your awareness, not your entire defensive height. After getting caught, centre-backs naturally want an extra few yards, but if the whole line keeps dropping you give the opposition time to play the next pass. Reset by looking at the pressure on the ball. If the passer has time, be ready to protect the space behind. If your midfield is applying real pressure and the passer cannot lift their head, that is usually the moment to recover your normal line. Talk about it as a unit rather than each defender reacting individually. A simple call such as 'hold', 'step' or 'drop' needs everybody to act together. The lesson from the first ball is not necessarily 'defend deeper'. It may be that the line was late to react, the pressure on the ball was poor, or the starting distances were wrong.

When I switch into centre-back I find it helps if somebody calls the next step early after the danger has gone. Otherwise four players all keep the extra five yards because nobody wants to be the one who moves first.

I'm still learning this. If one person stays deep I tend to stay with them because I'm scared of breaking the line. Having one clear voice would help more than everybody looking at each other.

We had this recently. One ball over the top and suddenly we were defending on the edge of our own box. It actually made the next twenty minutes harder because their midfield had time to look up and keep feeding balls in.

When the back four drops after one scare, the gap in front of them feels huge. You end up choosing between dropping with them or leaving their midfielders free. Definitely becomes a whole-team problem.
