My son keeps standing inside the little goal to stop shots

There is no goalkeeper but he has worked out that if he stands almost inside the mini goal he can stop loads of shots. Nobody has told him to do it, he has just decided thats his best way of defending. Would you actually step in and move him or let the game teach him that he is missing everything else?

I would step in, but I would not tell him he is doing something wrong. He has solved the problem in front of him: stand in the goal and shots are easier to stop. The issue is that he is now getting far fewer chances to chase, tackle, dribble and attack. I’d give him a simple challenge such as, “Can you come out and win the ball before it gets to the goal?” That still values his desire to defend. You can also use training games where there is no advantage to camping on the line because the goal is wider, there are two goals, or the direction changes. The point of no goalkeeper is that all three children get a fuller game. I would gently help him experience that rather than wait months for him to discover it by accident.

Two small goals instead of one can help in training. Harder to camp in both, so they have to come out and defend.

Tried this last night and it made a big difference. He still defended first, but at least he was actually in the game rather than inside the net.

This is exactly my son. He thinks he has discovered the secret to defending. We have started asking him to see if he can stop the shot before it gets near the goal.
