Do you ever ask one player to stay back in 3v3?

I am leaning towards no. We had a game where all three flew forward, lost it and conceded into an empty goal. One of the adults immediately told a player to stay back next time. For me that feels like solving the problem for them and probably creating a six-year-old centre-half already. Interested if anyone sees it differently.

I’m with you — I would not solve that by appointing a child to stay back. Conceding because all three attacked is actually a useful picture for them. Next time you can ask, “when we all go to the ball, what is behind us?” and see whether one of them starts recognising it. That does not mean nobody can ever be deeper. One player may naturally hang back for a moment because they have seen the danger. The difference is that they chose it from the game rather than being given the job permanently. At U7 I want all three to experience scoring, stopping goals, dribbling, chasing back and helping teammates. If we create a centre-half at six because the adults dislike conceding into an empty goal, we are probably fixing the score before we fix the learning.

my lad got put at the back all the time in little games when he was six because he was the sensible one. he barely touched the ball and started saying he was a defender like it was a job he couldnt leave. id much rather they all get caught out a few times than do that again.

I dont tell anyone to stay back, but I will ask 'whats behind us?' if all three have chased into the same corner. Some groups notice it themselves, some need the question a few times first.

Thats the distinction for me. Asking them to notice the empty space is coaching. Telling the same child to guard it all game is just solving it for them.

No permanent one back for me. They concede, turn round, learn why the goal was empty.
