My son asks me if he was good after every match

He is U9 and the first thing he says in the car is usually "was I good?" If I mention something he could improve he looks disappointed, but saying yes to everything feels pointless too. What is a better way for a parent to answer that question?

It is completely normal for a nine-year-old to look for your approval, as they often view your opinion as the ultimate scorecard for their effort. At this age, I would be less concerned with how good he was and more interested in how much he enjoyed the challenge. Instead of assessing his performance, shift the focus to his experience. You could ask, What was your favourite moment today, or did you try anything new? If he asks again, simply reply with, I loved watching you play. By shifting the conversation away from technical assessment, you remove the pressure of being judged. Save any specific feedback for training sessions where the coach is responsible for the developmental side of his game.

We moved away from answering yes or no. I normally ask what he enjoyed, what felt hard and whether there was anything he was pleased he tried. It took a while because he still wanted the score out of ten from me, but the car conversation is much better now. If he really pushes, I usually say I enjoyed watching him and leave the detailed football feedback to his coach.
