Coach says my son needs to communicate more

He's U10 and quite a quiet kid generally. The coach keeps encouraging him to talk more in matches, which I understand, but he now thinks being quiet means he's doing something wrong. Can communication be taught without trying to turn a naturally quiet player into the loudest one on the pitch?
