Who should organise the wall at a free kick?

We concede lots of confusion before the kick is even taken. Keeper shouts one number, defenders argue about distance and nobody watches the quick restart. At U12, what is the simplest responsibility split?

Keep the responsibility split very simple. The goalkeeper sets the wall because they can see the goal and the angle. One defender helps move the wall to the correct position. Another player stays alert to the ball, the quick restart and any short option. The remaining defenders organise the most dangerous runners and spaces. The important detail is that the whole team cannot turn away from the ball while the wall is being built. Agree the language in training so the goalkeeper does not need a long conversation during the match. If the referee is managing the distance or disciplinary action, the team must wait for the signal. If the restart is available quickly, the alert defender helps the group react. At U12, three clear jobs are enough: goalkeeper sets, one player helps, one watches the restart. The alert player protects against exactly that. Until the referee clearly makes the free kick ceremonial, assume a quick restart is possible. One player watches the ball, while the goalkeeper and helper organise the wall. If the whistle is required, the referee will signal when play can restart.

If the free kick is taken quickly and the keeper is still trying to organise the wall, would you tell the goalkeeper to stop organising and deal with the live ball first?

Yes. Once the ball is live, the priority changes immediately. The goalkeeper deals with the active attack and the wall organisation is finished. That is why one player staying alert to the ball matters. The team should never be so focused on setup that it stops recognising live play.
