Who should deal with the opposition full-back when they overlap?

Our U10 winger will track the opposition winger, but when their full-back goes past him we get confused about who follows. Sometimes our full-back gets dragged out and a gap opens inside; other times nobody goes at all. In 7v7, what simple responsibility would you give the wide player and defender when that second runner appears?

The confusion usually stems from the players focusing on the ball instead of the space behind them. At this age, their job is to recognise that the winger is no longer the immediate threat once the full-back commits to the overlap. Instead of barking instructions from the touchline, try setting a small-sided game constraint where you award a bonus point if the wide player tracks the recovery run inside. This forces them to look over their shoulder and decide whether to pass the runner to the defender or follow them deep. When you pause the game, instead of telling them who takes whom, ask: "When the defender has the ball, what information is the opposition full-back giving you with their movement?" The goal is for them to build a visual trigger for when to switch their attention from the attacker to the space.

Ours improved when we stopped giving three different instructions. Defender delays, winger recovers. If the winger can’t get back, then the defender deals with it. Not perfect every time but far less hesitation.

We’ve had this with our U11s. Our wide player goes with the overlap first and the defender stays connected inside rather than chasing out.
