What is the best way for a club to handle teams sharing the same pitch setup?

We sometimes have one 7v7 game finishing as the next U11 group is arriving, with coaches moving goals, parents coming through and everyone wanting warm-up space. Has anyone got a simple handover routine that stops matchdays feeling chaotic?

Before we blame the schedule, check whether every adult present has a specific role that supports the players rather than just adding extra noise. Chaos usually starts when adults are standing around waiting, which creates a magnet for parents to congregate in the exact spot you need for a transition. Instead, assign one parent or assistant to manage the 'exit' of the first group—getting them off the pitch and clear of the area—while another volunteer handles the 'arrival' of the second group at a designated holding zone. Give each adult one clear job, such as marking the warm-up perimeter or checking the pitch integrity. When roles are this clear, the handover stops being a crowd and starts being a process, keeping the players focused on their next game.

Thanks for the detailed answer. One follow-up — if two of our teams are training on the same half-pitch at the same time, how do we stop the sessions bleeding into each other without constantly shouting across the pitch?

Great question. The simplest fix is a visual boundary — cones or flat markers down the middle of the shared half, not just a line on the floor. Agree with the other coach which side is whose, and keep your drills on your side. If a drill naturally crosses the line, that's a sign it's too big for the space you've got.

That makes sense. Would you use the same approach for different age groups sharing, or does it change when it's a U8 group next to a U14 group?

Same principle, but give the younger group more buffer space. U8s will chase a ball anywhere — they don't care about your cone line. So if it's U8 next to U14, put a couple of metres of dead space between the two zones and have a coach or parent stand in the gap during drills. The older group can be trusted to stay on their side; the younger ones need a physical buffer.
