Their centre-back won everything in the air – should I have stopped playing against him?

At the weekend their centre-half dominated me whenever we played direct. I kept competing because I didn't want to hide, but looking back I'm wondering if I should have dropped off him or pulled wider instead. How does a striker change the contest when one defender has the physical advantage?

Yes, changing the contest would have been sensible. Competing honestly does not mean accepting the same unfavourable duel for ninety minutes. If the centre-back is dominant in the air, ask what causes him more difficulty. You might pull into a channel so the ball is not arriving directly onto his strongest area, drop short and make him decide whether to follow, or position for the second ball rather than trying to win every first contact. You can also change the type of service you are asking for. A ball into your feet, a pass into the side of the defender or a run across him may create a completely different problem. The useful mindset is not 'I have to beat him at his game'. It is 'what game do I want him to have to play?' Good forwards adapt the battle rather than repeatedly testing the defender's biggest strength.

If he's loving the duel, stop giving him the duel he wants. Drop off, move channel, ask for feet. Anything except standing under another high ball hoping the tenth one goes differently.

Centre-back perspective: absolutely. The striker who keeps trying to beat me at the thing I'm best at is a nice afternoon. The one who starts moving me into wider or deeper areas makes it much more awkward.

I've had this. At 35 I'm definitely not winning a jumping contest against a huge centre-half for ninety minutes. I started pulling into the side of him and suddenly the same long ball became much less comfortable for him.
