Good player. Moaned all night. Others trained properly.

Why are Verified Coach details private?
Selection should reflect the standards you have communicated to the whole group. A talented player does not need to be punished publicly for one poor session, but starting them automatically can tell teammates that attitude and effort only matter for some people. Speak privately and be specific. Explain which behaviour affected the group and what you need to see next. Starting on the bench can be a fair consequence if it matches the standards applied to everyone. Their playing time should still be managed developmentally, rather than removing most of the match as punishment. Give them a clear route back into the game and a positive role when they enter. At U13, accountability is part of development. The player should understand that ability creates opportunity, but it does not remove responsibility towards teammates and the training environment. Usually the starting decision is enough. Once the player enters, manage their minutes according to the normal development principles and the response they show. Reducing most of the match can turn accountability into punishment. The aim is to reset the standard, not make an example of them.
