Manager wants me higher in possession but I'm worried about the space behind me

I've been told to push much higher when we have the ball so our winger can move inside. It makes sense going forward, but after years of thinking defensively I feel like I'm abandoning the space behind me. What should reassure a full-back that it's actually safe to go?

VERIFIED COACH RESPONSE

Your confidence to go should come from the structure behind and around you, not simply from whether the space looks inviting. Before moving high, check three things: has your team secured possession, is there cover behind your side, and where is the opposition's immediate threat if the ball turns over? If the centre-back has shifted across, the deeper midfielder is connected and the ball carrier is under control, your higher position may actually help the team by pinning their winger back. If none of that protection exists, going at the same moment can make the team very open. It may help to stop thinking of the space behind you as 'your space' all the time. In possession, responsibilities can rotate. The important question is whether the team has protected it, not whether you personally are still standing there.

Old striker view: if your team is secure, push up and make me defend something. If possession is bouncing around and everyone's facing their own goal, maybe don't choose that exact second to disappear beyond the winger 😄.

As the winger ahead of a full-back, I actually want them higher because it stops me getting doubled up every time. The key is that somebody else has to understand what we've changed behind us.

This is where I get stuck as a young full-back. I can see the attacking benefit, but I feel personally responsible for the empty grass behind me even when the centre-back and midfielder have covered it.
