Late availability changes are making matchday squads a mess

From the club side we're getting more and more Friday-night messages saying a player is suddenly unavailable for a Saturday U16 game, then another player who was left out gets contacted at short notice. Nobody is doing anything wrong individually, but it creates a lot of frustration. Have clubs found a sensible availability deadline or process that works without being too rigid with families?

For me, the important bit is moving the deadline to Thursday evening. It forces a conversation earlier in the week and gives you 24 hours to organize the squad without the Friday-night chaos. At U16 level, the players need to take responsibility for their own availability. If a player knows they have a commitment, they should be flagging it by training on Thursday, not texting the night before. Implement a policy where late dropouts require a direct call from the player, not just a parent message. It changes the dynamic; it makes the player consider their commitment to the group rather than just treating the game like an optional activity. You will always have genuine emergencies, but moving the cutoff point creates a clearer expectation of professional habits. It reduces the noise for everyone and ensures that if a player is getting a late call-up, they have at least had a night to prepare mentally for the role.
