I've simplified my game with age – how simple is too simple?

I move the ball quicker now and don't try as many ambitious passes, which probably helps the team. The downside is I sometimes finish games thinking I've just gone sideways for ninety minutes. How does a deeper midfielder stay progressive without forcing passes that aren't really on?

VERIFIED COACH RESPONSE

Simple becomes too simple when you stop recognising clear opportunities to move the team forward. The aim is not to force ambitious passes; it is to notice when the progressive option is genuinely available. Before receiving, scan beyond the nearest safe teammate. If a forward player is free between lines and the pass is clean, use it. If the lane is crowded or the receiver would be immediately trapped, circulating the ball may be better. You can also progress the game without a difficult pass by changing the angle, carrying it five yards or playing one-two touch to move the opposition. Judge yourself on whether your decisions help the team advance at the right moments, not on how many forward passes you attempt. Experience should make your game more efficient, not more cautious. Keep the security, but stay ready to accelerate play when the picture gives you permission.

I think simple is only a problem if the forward option is obvious and you're ignoring it. Moving it quickly isn't negative by itself. Sometimes the experienced player who keeps things moving is the one controlling the game.
