I'm sometimes being used as the deepest midfielder now – how risky should I be?

I've had a few games as the 6 instead of one of the 8s. I like getting on the ball, but one mistake there feels like it opens the whole pitch. Should the deepest midfielder be trying to break lines whenever it's on, or is playing simple more important in that position?

VERIFIED COACH RESPONSE

As the deepest midfielder, risk should be connected to what happens if the pass fails. Breaking a line can be valuable, but the same pass has a very different consequence when both full-backs are high and your centre-backs are exposed. Before receiving, check what protection is behind you and where the next pressure is coming from. If the team is balanced and the forward pass is clean, play it. If one turnover would leave a direct run at your back line, keeping the ball can be the more attacking decision because it allows the team to organise for the next action. I would not define the role as 'play safe'. Think of it as choosing the right moment to accelerate the attack. A good 6 often makes difficult football look simple because they recognise when the game is ready for the risk rather than forcing it on every possession.
