I can play out, but when the press comes properly I stop trusting it

I'm comfortable receiving from the keeper when there's space, but against a team that pressed us aggressively I started clearing balls I would normally try to play. I don't want to be reckless just to prove I'm a ball-playing defender. How do you judge when the risk is actually worth taking?

VERIFIED COACH RESPONSE

Being a ball-playing centre-back does not mean proving you can play through every press. When the press arrives, look at the quality of the next action. If you can receive with a clear picture, draw an opponent and find a free teammate, keep playing. If your only short option would receive facing their own goal with pressure already arriving, the pass may be technically possible but tactically poor. Use the goalkeeper and your partner to move the press before you try to break it. Sometimes one extra pass creates the lane you were trying to force immediately. Going longer is not a failure if it attacks the space the press has left. The aim is to beat the pressure, not to collect short passes. Keep trusting your ability, but let the picture decide how you use it.

If they're properly committing numbers to press you, there has to be space somewhere else. I'd be more annoyed if we kept feeding the exact trap they wanted than if our centre-back clipped three sensible balls into the channel.

Yep. As a centre-back I think the ego bit matters. You can start feeling like going long means they've beaten you. Sometimes going over them is how you beat them.

I've played both full-back and centre-back and the press changes your idea of what 'brave' looks like. Sometimes the brave decision is putting it over the press instead of rolling somebody a hospital pass because you want to prove you can play.

I'm still guilty of clearing the next three after one scary press though. The hard bit is not turning one sensible longer ball into abandoning the build-up completely.
