How aggressive should a goalkeeper be behind a high defensive line?

Our back four has started defending much higher and I'm being asked to sweep behind them. I like being proactive, but there are balls where I start coming and realise the striker will probably arrive first. What should I read before deciding to leave the box?

VERIFIED COACH RESPONSE

Behind a high line, your starting position has to move with the team rather than stay fixed near the goal. When the ball is under pressure and your defenders are high, you can be more aggressive because the passer has less time to choose the perfect ball. When the opponent has time, their head is up and the run is already threatening behind the line, give yourself a little more protection rather than starting another race from too high. Before leaving the box, judge three things: the distance to the ball, the speed and angle of the attacker, and whether you can arrive clearly first. If that picture is not convincing, prepare for the next action instead of forcing the sweep. The goal is not to come for everything behind the line. It is to make the space behind the defenders feel smaller without turning every through ball into a 50-50.
