Four little pitches and four adults giving four different messages

Asked by mattagain2

We ran a club 3v3 night with several pitches going at once. The football was great, but every adult facilitated differently. One barely spoke, one coached constantly, one stopped play to explain rules and another was almost refereeing it. Has anyone agreed a really simple approach across all the adults before a festival? I am thinking two or three things everyone does, then leave the football alone.

I’d definitely agree a few basics before the next one. I would keep it to three things: 1. Help with the restart/rule only when the children need it. 2. Do not coach their next football decision. 3. Keep the game moving and keep the environment positive. That still leaves adults enough freedom to be themselves, but the children get a similar experience whichever pitch they move onto. I’d also have a two-minute chat with all facilitators before the first game rather than sending a long document nobody reads. The biggest issue is when one pitch gives players loads of ownership and then they move next door and an adult tells them where to stand and where to pass. Consistency matters more than having the perfect wording.

We ended up with three rules on one sheet for the adults: keep it moving, help with rules not football choices, stay positive. Anything longer was getting interpreted differently anyway.

we did something similar and then a five minute chat before the games. the chat was more useful than the sheet because you could say 'if they dont know whose ball, help them; if you know who should pass, keep it to yourself'. everyone understood that.
