When the ball goes back to the goalkeeper, I want the team to treat it as a chance to rebuild the picture.
Centre-backs can split or change height. Full-backs can decide whether they are giving width or moving higher. The 6 should scan whether the central lane has opened rather than simply standing where they were five seconds ago.
The goalkeeper also needs to recognise whether the opposition have followed the ball back or stayed in their previous positions.
I’d use possession games where a pass into the goalkeeper or target player resets the phase and the team has to create three new passing lines before going forward again.
The key behaviour is moving while the ball travels backwards.
If everybody waits until the keeper receives, the opponent has time to reset too.
Recycling is useful because it changes the angle of attack.
If the team keeps exactly the same positions, you have kept the ball but not changed the problem.
