Three defenders or four in 9v9?

Question

I know there is no right answer, but our group looks comfortable in a 1-3-3-2 and much less comfortable with a back four. The argument for four is that it prepares them for later, but I am not convinced future 11v11 should dictate what works for these players now. Interested how others are thinking about it.

Both can work, and I would not choose a back four simply because 11v11 is coming later.

A 1-3-3-2 can give U12s really clear relationships: outside defenders can step forward, the midfield three can learn different distances, and the two forwards can work together. A 1-4-3-1 gives different problems and can be useful for some groups.

The important question is what the players are learning inside the shape.

If the back three are being given freedom to carry, support midfield and defend wider spaces, they are learning plenty that transfers later. Preparing for 11v11 does not mean copying an 11v11 structure early.

I’d keep the formation that helps your current group understand the game, then expose them to other roles and pictures over time.

9v9 is a bridge, not a rehearsal of one future system.

A back four can be useful if you want the outside defenders learning when to advance and when to hold, but I would not sell it as 'preparing for later'. Any shape can teach transferable relationships if the roles are coached properly.

We use a back three because it suits the group, not because we think three is the answer. The outside centre-backs get loads of chances to defend wide and step into midfield. I dont see that as worse preparation for 11v11 at all.
