The retreat line is making our first pass predictable

The retreat line should give the goalkeeper time, not tell them where the pass has to go. I’d deliberately vary the restart picture in training. Sometimes one defender is marked. Sometimes the centre player is free. Sometimes the goalkeeper can carry or play a different side. You probably don’t need a drill for it. Start a 4v4 or 5v5 game from the keeper ten times and keep changing where the pressure starts. Then ask one question: “What have they left free?” If players start thinking the retreat line means split two defenders and pass short every time, we’ve accidentally turned a helpful rule into a pattern. I’d rather see an U10 choose a sensible different solution than complete the same tidy first pass every restart.
