The goalkeeper gets blamed whenever we concede

My daughter has started noticing teammates saying things like 'you should have saved that' whenever a goal goes in. They are eight and I do not think they are trying to be horrible, but she is starting to take every goal personally. How would a coach deal with this as a team habit?

Why don't we show coach names?
I would address this with the whole group rather than protect the goalkeeper separately. At eight, children often only see the last action. The shot goes in, so they think the goalkeeper caused the goal. I would help them understand that goals come from lots of moments and that nobody gets blamed. Keep it simple: we solve problems together and we react together. If somebody says “you should have saved that”, I would calmly challenge the habit in the moment rather than shame the child who said it. I would also make sure the goalkeeper is not receiving a big sympathy reaction after every goal. That can reinforce the idea that conceding is their personal failure. The aim is a team culture where players can notice mistakes without assigning blame.

From refereeing, I hear this constantly from adults too. If the touchline blames the keeper, the players copy it very quickly.

I would stop it early. Not with a lecture, just 'we don't blame teammates'. Otherwise it becomes the normal explanation for every goal.

Keeper parent here. The comments hurt more than the goals. Our coach started saying 'we defend together' whenever blame appeared and it slowly disappeared.

Exactly. My daughter could handle conceding. What she struggled with was feeling everyone had decided it was hers.
