Subs only getting 20 minutes in a 60-minute game

Our squad is 13 and a couple of players regularly seem to get around 20 minutes. The coach says 9v9 is harder to rotate because the shape changes when three or four come on together. Is that a fair reason at U12 or should the adults be finding a way to give everyone more?

Why don't we show coach names?
The shape changing is a real coaching challenge, but I would not use it as the reason two players consistently receive only a third of the game. Current 9v9 guidance treats equal game time as the priority and gives at least 50% as best practice. That does not mean every match has to be mathematically identical, but a repeated 20-minute pattern would make me look at the squad plan. At U12, coming on as a substitute is already part of learning. Players also need enough time after they enter to settle, make mistakes and influence the game. I’d ask the coach how they are tracking minutes across several weeks and how they decide who gets the shorter spells. The conversation is less about demanding an exact number and more about whether each child is genuinely getting comparable opportunities to develop.

Twenty minutes regularly would not sit right with me at U12. One week because of circumstances, fine. Every week because the shape is difficult to rotate sounds like the adults have designed a squad they cannot manage.

If my child is travelling every week to play 20 minutes, I would want a very clear conversation about why. At 12 the match is still part of the development programme, not a reward for the nine the coach trusts most.

13 is manageable if changes are planned. Harder if you improvise every substitution.

We started tracking minutes because we genuinely thought everyone was getting roughly half. They werent. Same two players were always on the short end when games were tight.

Did you share the minute records with parents or keep them internal? I can see both helping and causing a lot of extra debate.
