Should a grassroots coach write a player reference for an academy trial?

A short, factual reference can be useful if the club has asked for one or the parent wants context, but I would keep it very grounded. Describe what you genuinely observe: how the player trains, their attitude, a couple of football strengths, how they respond to feedback, and the environment they normally play in. Avoid predictions such as “definitely academy standard” or comparisons with other children. The trial staff need to make their own judgement in their environment. I would also be transparent with the parent about what you are sending. From a talent-ID point of view, one coach’s reference is context, not evidence that overrides what selectors see. So yes, be supportive and honest. A paragraph is enough. Your best contribution is giving a clear picture of the child you actually know, not trying to sell them into the opportunity.
