School match and club match at the same time – who should a child choose?

My son has been picked for a school football event on the same morning as his normal U8 club game. Both adults say there is no pressure, but he thinks he is letting somebody down whichever one he misses. At this age, should the adults be making it much clearer that either choice is fine?

Why don't we show coach names?
At that age I would remove the idea that the child is choosing who to disappoint. School football and club football can both be good experiences. Sometimes they will clash. An eight-year-old should hear very clearly from the adults: “Whichever one you choose this week is fine.” Then make the decision around enjoyment, the importance of the particular event, travel and what the child wants to experience. It does not need to become a rule for every future clash. I would also encourage the adults to communicate directly rather than sending messages through the child. The conversation can be very simple. Missing one U8 club game for a school event is not a statement about commitment, just as choosing the club match would not mean the school team matters less.

We had this with a school tournament last year. Club coach just said ‘go and enjoy it, see you next week’. That one sentence took all the drama out of it for my son.
