I would look at the support around the wide defender before I corrected the defender again.
If they receive near the touchline and the opposition remove the inside passes, they may genuinely have no useful forward option.
The nearest midfielder can move into a different height, the winger can come short or move beyond, and the goalkeeper or centre-back can stay available behind.
Then the defender has a triangle rather than a dead end.
A 4v4 directional game in a slightly wider area works well because you can repeatedly create the same pressure near the side.
I’d stop using “open up” unless the body position is actually the problem.
At 9v9, support angles often solve what looks like an individual technical issue.
Before fixing the player on the ball, check whether their teammates have given them anything to play with.
