Our players always ask 'when are we having a match?'

I’m happy to finish with free football most weeks. If the players value that part of the session, it can be a good chance to see what has carried over without another condition sitting on top of the game. It does not have to be exactly 5v5 every time. Use the numbers you have. What I would avoid is treating the free game as a reward they only earn if they behaved during the “proper” coaching. That teaches them that the conditioned practices are work and the match is the fun bit. Try making the earlier practices feel more like football too: clear direction, goals to attack, opposition and lots of decisions. Then the final game becomes a natural progression rather than the only part they recognise as real football. Predictable is not always bad. Children like knowing there is plenty of football at the end.
