One player is always moved to cover everyone else

Question

We have a really reliable player who can do every job. If a defender is missing, she goes back. If midfield is struggling, she moves there. If we need a goal, she goes higher. She is valuable everywhere, but I am starting to wonder if constantly fixing the team with her is getting in the way of her own development.

This is a common problem with the reliable all-rounder.

The team benefits because she solves every gap, but she may end up having less continuity in her own learning than the players around her.

I’d give her a development priority for a block of weeks. That does not have to mean one fixed position, but it might mean most of her minutes are in midfield while the occasional defensive or attacking role still gives variety.

Then the coach can ask: “What are we trying to help her improve this month?” rather than “Where do we need her today?”

At 9v9, versatility is a strength and should stay a strength.

I’d just be careful that being dependable does not become a reason she always carries the team’s organisational problems.

Sometimes the most flexible player needs the clearest personal plan.

Versatility is a strength until it means the player has no continuity. I would want to know what her own target is, not just how useful she is to the team.

We had a player like this and eventually gave her six weeks mainly in midfield. Not because she could not cover elsewhere, but because every other player was getting a position to learn while she was getting a problem to fix.
