My son has started comparing himself to academy players

Asked by Lucy_94

Two boys from his school have recently joined academy programmes and now every conversation is about who is 'academy level'. My son enjoys his football but has started judging every mistake against those boys. How can parents and coaches keep ambition positive without pretending pathways do not matter to children at this age?

Why don't we show coach names?
I would not tell him academy football does not matter. He can already see that it matters to children around him. What I would change is what he uses as the comparison. Instead of “am I academy level?”, bring the conversation back to things he can control: what is improving in his game, what he enjoys doing, and what he wants to get better at next. Two children can be in completely different environments at ten and still develop in very different ways over the next few years. It also helps if adults stop using academy status as the main football compliment. Praise specific things: brave receiving, better decisions, persistence after a mistake. Ambition is fine. The problem starts when a badge becomes the scorecard for every child. He can want to improve without needing to prove he belongs in somebody else's programme.

Hard part is school. Even if parents keep it sensible, kids know exactly who trains where and compare everything.

True, but home can still be the place that does not add another ranking. We cannot control the playground conversation, only whether we feed it.

We stopped asking our daughter whether she was 'academy standard' and started asking what she was enjoying and improving. It sounds obvious but the label had taken over every football conversation at home.
