If the U18 player is not genuinely part of the senior match plan, I would usually rather they play.
There are valid reasons for taking youth players with the first team: they may be the next option in a position, the coach may want them to experience the environment, or there may be a realistic chance of minutes.
But repeatedly naming the same two players to make up a bench while they miss 80–90 minutes of youth football is not automatically development.
The senior coach should be able to explain the purpose. How likely are minutes? What role might the player enter? What are they learning from being there?
Sometimes a player can start for the U18s and then join the senior squad later, depending on scheduling.
A strong pathway is not measured by how many youth names appear on an adult teamsheet.
It is measured by whether those players are progressing towards meaningful senior football.
