Captain every week or rotate it around the whole U9 squad?

One U9 is a natural organiser and would probably be captain every week if we let them. Is there real value in that, or should everyone rotate through it?

Why don't we show coach names?
At U9 I would rotate it. The child who is already a natural organiser will still get chances to lead without needing the armband every week. Other players may surprise you when they are given a small responsibility. I would also keep captaincy low-key. Let one player lead the warm-up, another help organise a restart, another welcome a new teammate, another speak at the end. That gives leadership more meaning than simply deciding who walks out first. At that age I’d be more interested in what the children learn from the responsibility than whether the team has the “best captain”. If one child always gets the role because they are already confident, the captaincy may simply reinforce what you already know rather than develop anybody else.

I’d rotate but not randomly every week. Give the player a little responsibility in training first, then captain them at the weekend. Otherwise it can become a token armband rather than any kind of learning.

We do something similar. One child leads the warm-up, another checks everyone has a bib, another captains the match. It spreads responsibility without making captain the only role that matters.

Same captain all season at nine feels unnecessary to me. Half the job seems to be coin toss and remembering which end you’re shooting at.

I rotate it at U9. The natural leader still leads without the armband, which is actually quite useful to see. Other kids get a small chance to organise without it becoming a big status thing.

That first point is interesting. If the usual leader keeps helping even without the armband, you know it is actual leadership and not just enjoying the title.
