Bad pitch, strong wind, both teams still trying to play exactly the same way

Adapting is sensible when the conditions change the risk of your normal actions. On a poor pitch, a five-yard pass across your own box may carry much more uncertainty than it does on a good surface. In strong wind, a high switch or goalkeeper kick may behave differently enough that the players need another option. That does not mean abandoning your principles. You can still value possession, support and good decision-making while using fewer risky passes in your own third, playing into channels more often, or keeping the ball on the ground when the wind makes aerial play unpredictable. I’d discuss the conditions in the warm-up and let the players test them. The important thing is making the change deliberately. “Going long” because everyone panics is different from recognising that the environment has altered which pass gives you the best chance of controlling the next action.
