I’d change the protection around him before asking him to stop being the player he is.
After a booking, he cannot attack every duel in the same way. But if he simply drops off, the opponent gets time and your whole back line can be pushed deeper.
Look at the winger in front of him first. Can they recover earlier and stop the direct 1v1? Can the nearest midfielder slide across so the full-back is not exposed to repeated runs?
You can also change the pressing direction so play is less likely to be forced down that side.
The full-back still needs to defend actively: good body shape, delay, show away from danger, choose the tackle rather than avoid every tackle.
And have a substitution plan if the opponent is clearly targeting the booking.
Game management is partly protecting players from situations where one more mistimed action changes the match.
